        Cinqueterre Campogrande Altare  Bonanni

Film: Le Cinque Terre, 1942

The Cinque Terre in Liguria: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso. Five villages planted on an arduous coast, without any street connecting each other or leading to the back country. The inhabitants are fishermen and peasants. They carved their fields in the rock, flattening them first with a pickaxe and then carrying by hand some soil and grit: a work that seems absurd and inhuman. After every storm a part of the field is destroyed. The day after, patiently and tenaciuosly, people start to rebuild.

Text at the beginning of the film.
